Cultural Program

Through its cultural program - Dance India, India Foundation offers regular dance lessons in Bharata Natyam, a classical dance of India.

Based on the ancient text Natya Shastra, Bharata Natyam is the most ancient of all the Indian classical dance forms. Developed in the temples of South India, it is deeply spiritual and is steeped in the religion, philosophy and traditions of India. It is thus considered an artistic yoga, for revealing the spiritual through the corporal or physical. The dancers dissolve their identity into the rhythm and music of the dance, making their body an instrument for the experience of the soul. Today, Bharata Natyam is acknowledged as a divine art that celebrates the purification of the spirit. Although it has its origins in Tamil Nadu, it is widely practiced all over India and outside.

These classes in Bharata Natyam are open to all. The emphasis of these classes are on learning and perfecting the technique of the dance form and developing performance skills. After several years of intense and sustained training students showcase their learning through the Arangetram, which is an important milestone in the growth and development of a Bharata Natyam dancer.

Through its alliance with Natya Academy in Cary, North Carolina, India Foundation has been able to extend the reach of its cultural program. Weekly classes in Bharata Natyam are offered in Cary as well. Click on Collaborations to see samples of this collaboration.
